About GEO

GEO is a set of free interactive databases and tools built collaboratively by people like you

GOAL: to promote an understanding, on a global scale, of the dynamics of change in energy systems, quantify emissions and their impacts, and accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral, environmentally benign energy systems while providing affordable energy to all.

By providing easy to use and visualize data, models and analysis tools we aim to engage the public and the experts.

Data in GEO can be edited from anywhere in the world.

We invite collaborations to help build GEO.

  3. Coal Ports
  4. LNG Ports
  5. Oil Ports
  6. Rail Links
  7. Road Links
  8. Shipping Lanes
  9. Electric Power Grid

Below "Types", the data for Energy Transmission Infrastructure are organized by

  1. Country
  2. State/Province/Region (primary geographical division within a country)

Pages of Energy Transmission Data

At the lowest level, the data for each individual Energy Transmission Infrastructure is displayed as a page and this page is organized into the following 9 modules that are common to all 9 "Types" of Energy Transmission Infrastructure

  1. Plant Identifier
  2. Location
  3. Associated Infrastructure
  4. Environmental Issues
  5. Major Upgrades
  6. Owner and Operator Information
  7. Comments
  8. References
  9. Notes

Data for Coal, LNG, and Oil Ports have 3 additional modules

  1. Description
  2. Unit Information
  3. Annual Performance

Data for the 6 Linking Infrastructure Types (Gas and Oil Pipelines, Rail and Road Links, Shipping Lanes and Electric Power Grid) have 3 additional Modules

  1. Station A
  2. Connecting Infrastructure
  3. Station B

Data for 2 Linking Infrastructure Types (Gas and Oil Pipelines) have 1 additional Module

  1. Annual Performance

Description of the Nine modules common to all 9 Types of Infrastructure

Identifier

  1. Name: Convention is a comma-less concatenated string with "Name of Plant, Type, Country"
  2. Name: The 6 "Linking Infrastructure" Type systems have two names - overall and segment name. Example: for the pipeline segment between Erzurum and Ankara in Turkey on the Nabucco pipeline enter overall Pipeline Name = Nabucco, and Segment Name = Erzurum2Ankara Turkey
  3. Rating: The three fields "Status of Project, Project Efficiency, and Overall Rating" capture overall ststus
  4. Country Assigned ID: This is a name or number given by the country for each Energy Transmission Infrastructure
  5. GEO Assigned ID: Non-editable ID give by GEO
  6. Select Currency for data in this page: This will be the default currency for all cost fields where currency is not specified

Location

This module provides geo-location of the Infrastructure and its spatial impacts

  1. Placemark: Specify Latitude and Logitude or drag default placemark to appropriate point. "Linking Infrastructure Types" have 2 placemarks for the starting (Station A) and ending (Station B) Locations
  2. Location Accuracy: Mark one of the 4 options
  3. Drawing Polylines or Polygons: Click on icon and then draw line/polygon on Map. Terminate adding points by double clicking. Points can be edited by highlighting them (move mouse over the line) and then dragging them. Points can be added by activating shadow point in the middle
  4. Why Draw Polylines: Show connections between relevant infrastructure
  5. Why Draw Polygons: Mark regions to show connections or impacts -- Visible Footprint, Impact on Water or Air Quality, etc
  6. Delete and Restore: You can hide/delete individual polylines or polygons OR restore all from saved (last moderated) version
  7. Polyline showing Connector: For the 6 "Linking Infrastructure" Type systems draw the connector using polyline and give it the same name as "Name of the Segment" in "Identifier"

Associated Infrastructure (AI)

This module provides a way to cross-link individual units within and between categories. For example: to establish the network (coal mines, railway links, water resources and electric transmission grid) associated with a coal power plant please add appropriate entries to this table by following the menu. These units are then stored and cross-link the selected coal power plant, coal mines, railway links, water resources and electric transmission grid.

  1. Initiate adding a link by clicking on "Add AI" button
  2. Select from menu the category, type, country, state to see list of facilities already in GEO database. Clink on name of facility (if it exists in GEO) to add it as a cross-reference
  3. If infrastructure is not yet in GEO database, please add name and description in input box to serve as a reference
  4. All the placemarks, polylines and polygons defining the associated network are displayed on individual factsheets for these plants using an API to Google Maps

Environmental Issues

This table provides a list of environmental issues

  1. To add a new issue click on "Add Another Issue"
  2. Category: Select the type of issue you are reporting from the menu
  3. Description: Describe the issue in words. Include dates over which this issue was relevant
  4. We ask users to not delete previous issues that have been resolved. Instead add "Issue Resolved [Date]" at the begining of that description.

Major Upgrades

This table provides a brief description (256 characters) of past, ongoing and planned upgrades, their cost and year.

  1. To add a new upgrade entry click on "Add Another Upgrade"
  2. Year: Years over which upgrade was carried out. For a plant upgraded in 2000, the duration 2000-2000 is valid.

Owner and Operator Information

This module provides space for a brief description (256 characters) of owners, operators, main EPC contractors and type of Ownership.

  1. To add an additional owner click on "Add Another Owner". Then add owner name, short decription, and percent share

Comments

This table provides space to capture important information/issues that the GEO form does not include.

  1. To add a new comment click on "Add Another Comment"

References

This table provides References to information on that page and a brief description of their relevance.

  1. To add a new upgrade click on "Add Another Reference"

Notes

This module is not editable. GEO uses it to provide caveats, clarifying notes, and abbreviations and system of measurement units used:

  1. Measurement units: definition of units and their abbreviations used
  2. Common information for data for a plant type or for a country

Three additional modules for the 3 Types of Ports
