GEO is a set of free interactive databases and tools built collaboratively by people like you
GOAL: to promote an understanding, on a global scale, of the dynamics of change in energy systems, quantify emissions and their impacts, and accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral, environmentally benign energy systems while providing affordable energy to all.
By providing easy to use and visualize data, models and analysis tools we aim to engage the public and the experts.
Data in GEO can be edited from anywhere in the world.
We invite collaborations to help build GEO.
Portugal has no significant reserves of fossil fuels oil, coal or gas. It imports coal vial the Sines coal port and natural gas via the Sines LNG terminal from Nigeria and from Algeria via the Europe-Mehgrab, Al Andalus and Extremadura Pipelines entering Portugal at Campo Major.
In 2011, the annual consumption of coal was about 6 million tonnes, of natural gas about 5 billion cubic meters and of oil about 14 million tonnes.
Hydroelectric power plants are a big part of Portugal's electric power generation system. Over the last decade, the fossil-fuel based units have migrated from oil fired to gas fired CCGT systems. These gas power plants and hydro (with repowering into pumped storage systems) systems will facilitate the integration of emerging solar and wind systems.
Its National Electricity Transmission Grid (RNT) and National Natural Gas Transportation Grid (RNTGN) are operated by a single company REN-Redes Energeticas Nacionais.
